Suicide In Kansas City Teens
I chose this topic because of the increasing number of teens in the Kansas City Metropolitan who have committed suicide. Kansas City is a small enough city where if there is a disaster, no matter what, everyone wants to help out. That being said, when a teen commits suicide in a local private school in Kansas, everyone is severely impacted: those in the Kansas public schools, those in Missouri private schools, those whose schools are primarily Christian, and those whose schools are primarily Jewish. I feel connected to this topic because I have known a few of the teen suicide victims in the Kansas City area. I want people across the city to be aware that they have other options than ending their lives.
There is a challenge with teen suicide because of the increasing amounts of teen suicide that happen right under parents. This matters because people are not given the proper information to help those who are a risk to themselves when they could be receiving the help that they need. I am the one to catalyze change at the local level on this topic because I have seen many people suffer with depression (including myself).
I believe that every teen has the right to get the help that they need before they choose to end their lives. I think that as a member of the KC Metro Community, it is important for a teenager to try and make a change among my peers because I am one of them. I know what teens are going through and how a person can get out of the bubble they feel they are in. I hope that I can help raise awareness for the individuals who may think that suicide is there only option know that they DO have other options: reaching out to friends/families or get the medical attention that they need. Not only this, but I hope to help other teens and parents recognize the signs of their children or friend in order to prevent suicide by making connections to aid those with depression and suicidal thoughts.
So how do you think we can prevent suicide?

I would like to talk with my administration as well as the administration in the major local schools about creating a program for students which establishes awareness and help for those to learn and manage, either their lives or to help the lives of their peers. I would try to organize a talk with a suicidal survivor to share their story. Not only this, I would like to have small groups who have been affected by another suicidal individual to be able to talk about their grief and how they can learn from this experience.
What can you do?
You can spread the word for people to be aware of teen suicide and how they can help! Try to be able to recognize a suicidal individual and help those who are in need.
